In the winter there is more rain and snow than in other times of the year. Here in San Diego we do not have to worry about the snow but we definitely have to worry about the rain. When it rains outside it is easy for adults, kids, and pets to track mud into your home. If you have mud on your carpet or couches how do you get it out?
Let Mud Dry Before Treating Carpet & Sofa Stains
Thankfully it is actually simpler than you would think to get mud out of your carpet. First you will want to sit down and relax for a little while. This may go against everything in your body but we promise it is the right thing to do. If you try and remove fresh mud stains all that happens is the mud continues to spread even more than it was originally. You will want to wait for it to dry before you even mess with the mud.
How to Clean Muddy Footprints from Carpet
Once the mud is dry you will want to use your fingers to get any large chunks out of your carpet. After you have removed the large chunks get out your vacuum cleaner out. Slowly vacuum all of the muddy spots to remove the smaller pieces of mud that you could not get out with your fingers. You will want to vacuum the spot two or three times longer than you normally would vacuum. The more you vacuum the better. Once you have removed the dirt you will have some stains on your carpet that you will need to address next. Mix one teaspoon mild dishwashing detergent with one cup of lukewarm water. You can double or triple this mixture if needed. Get out a white cloth. Blot the solution onto your carpet. You will want to make sure that you do not rub the mixture into the carpet as that will make any dirt and debris simply go further into your carpet. You may need to switch your towel out as you blot. Keep blotting until the stain is gone. Then get a clean cloth or paper towels to dry the area.
How Do You Remove Mud Stains from Upholstery
Sometimes the mud is not only on your carpet but it also gets on your couch as well. Sometimes small children can be the culprit behind this but more often than not it is actually your pet. This is especially true if you have a doggy door for your pets to go in and out of during the day. To remove mud from your couch you will simply follow the steps outlined above. If you have the ability to throw any of the pillows or arm rest covers into the washing machine you may want to do that.
