Hardwood flooring is an amazing investment to any home. Wood floors simply enhance the look and beauty of any home. In general, hardwood floors are easy to maintain and clean. However, over time they will need to be refinished. When refinishing hardwood floors, the surface sealer is removed, the wood sanded down until its smooth to the touch, and then resealed. When refinishing hardwood floors, you revive the wood and even have the option to stain the wood a new color. One of the important parts of owning hardwood floor is knowing when it is time to refinish the wood floors. Steam Magic Carpet Cleaning would like to share some of the common signs that the hardwood floors need to be refinished.
Scratches & Gouges Throughout Hardwood Floors
Over time, hardwood floors can develop tiny to large scratches all over the floor’s surface. These scratches often come from dog or cat nails, dirt, shoes, or the dragging of furniture. When scratches mar the hardwood floor, it is time to refinish the wood. When refinishing hardwood floors, they are sanded down which will remove the scratches and revive the look of the wood. You do not need or want to refinish the wood every time a scratch appears. Hardwood floors can only be refinished so many times before the wood becomes too thin to refinish. It is good to refinish hardwood floors when there are a ton of little scratches or when additional symptoms appear.
Hardwood Floor Discoloration
Another major indication that it is time to refinish the hardwood floor is when their color begins to change. When hardwood is exposed to sun, or dirt begins to rub down on the protective sealer, often the wood will begin to turn gray and eventually black. As the hardwood begins to turn a gray color the wood is beginning to dry out and is heading toward a serious problem. When you refinish the wood floors, the wood is replenished and the color is revived with a fresh coat of stain and sealer. Graying along with scratches is a clear sign that your hardwood floors are due for refinishing. If the wood is beginning to turn black, you have waited too long. The wood will remain dark. You can still refinish the floor but you will want to choose a dark colored stain or even consider painting the wood. Painted hardwood floors aren’t very popular. However, when the wood turns black, it is not a bad choice and when done correctly painted wood floors can look great.
Water Damage Swollen Wood Floor
Wood and water is not a great combo. Water can cause wood to rot and even mold. When hardwood floors have been recently exposed to a heavy amount of water, you may want to consider refinishing them. Another common effect of water damage, is the wood floor will swell and develop cupping. The cupping can be repaired by sanding the wood down to a flat the smooth surface. Water damage can be erased when refinishing the hardwood floors.
