You wouldn’t think that water can leave stains behind, but it can, and water-stained carpet looks bad. Water is used for many cleaning jobs and if you aren’t careful, it can leave behind a stain of its own. Brown stains can be the result of moisture absorbing the dirt into the carpet and pulling it to the surface. This can happen if spilled water is left to dry because there’s sediment in the water. Carpets made of natural fibers may need the expertise of carpet cleaning professionals. Water stains on these carpets can cause a process known as cellulosic browning that will not come out with this method.

Steps to Remove Water Stains on Carpet

1. The first and most obvious step is to make sure the source of water is stemmed. The supply of water to the home needs to be turned off at the main and turn the taps off till the pipes have run dry. Stains caused by a leaky pipe or plumbing issue needs to be repaired, otherwise the stain will come back or cause other damage. Stains from a spill need the next steps.
2. The second step is to remove the sediment or dirt that is in the fibers of the carpet. Make a solution by mixing a teaspoon of dishwashing soap with a cup of water. Take a clean cloth and dab the solution onto the stain. Make sure to test a hidden area to make sure the solution won’t discolor your carpet. Work from the outside of the stain towards the center to reduce any chance the dirt will spread into clean areas. Make sure you don’t rub as this will result in worn down carpet fibers.
3. The next step is to remove the stain. Using your fingers, work this liquid into the carpet and let it sit for a few minutes. You should also try this mixture out in a hidden area before your start. Use another clean towel and press it into the damp area to pull as much of the moisture out as possible and let the area air dry completely to see if you got the stain out. If the stain is still present, you can repeat this step and leave the mixture on the carpet a little longer. Just make sure the carpet dries completely between applications. After you get the stain out, it’s good to vacuum the area to make sure it’s totally clean.
4. You can also sprinkle baking soda over the stain to absorb any lingering moisture that may surface. It will also work to restore a nice smell to the carpet. Wait two to three hours before you vacuum.
