The best way to remove excess is to use a clean cloth and dab at the area starting from the inside and working to the outside. Once you feel that you have removed as much as the stain as you can use salt to layer over the stain completely. The salt then needs to be left in place for up to a few hours to allow it to soak up the red staining. The salt will pull the stain from the carpet into the salt then you can remove the salt with a vacuum.

If you want to find a solution that tends to work on the spot then club soda may be your best bet. If you have a bottle of club soda you want to use it along with a clean cloth. The cloth can be dipped in the soda and then used to dab at the stain. Start from the outer edge and work towards the middle using a new part of the clean cloth as necessary. You can repeat the same process over if needed.
